Just to Get a Rep selected for MipTV Picks by RealScreen

Posted 1 April 2008 by Peter Gerard

RealScreen Magazine featured Just to Get a Rep in their MipTV special this year:

Like so much of street culture, tagging and graffiti is viewed as a nuisance and a problem to outsiders. Art to some and a misdemeanor to others, graffiti is inextricably linked to hip-hop and the neglected youths who have grown up in poor neighborhoods all over the US.

It's a form of expression with a long history. Street kids began tagging New York City trains over 30 years ago, both as a way of expressing themselves and marking their territories. Those early manifestations of the craft have given birth to a culture based (at least within itself) on respect and camaraderie, and the desire to create something better in an otherwise barren landscape.

Just to Get a Rep explores the relationship of graffiti to both mainstream and counter culture, with tales told by the people who were there at the beginning and those who continue their tradition today.
